Transport for London (TfL) is installing six VivaCity sensors on Tulse Hill’s gyratory as part of its Healthy Streets initiative.

The sensors commence data recording in September for an initial six-month period. A feasibility study will follow, taking nine to twelve months.

TfL’s proposal states that the “primary objective of this project is to develop a robust, data-driven evidence base to ensure that future design intervention decisions for the gyratory are informed by up-to-date and accurate.”

What are VivaCity sensors?

The Vivacity Sensor Platform is a road space usage monitoring service. It combines an IoT sensor, cloud database and API or web application to provide clients with a real-time and historical view of various road users and their interactions within the sensor’s field of view.

VivaCity smart sensors offer a 3-in-1 solution: continuous multimodal data tracking historical monitoring and advanced road safety analysis.

The system complies with GDPR and collects no personal data.

What data will the sensors log?

The sensors will provide site-specific evidence, including:

  • Near-miss analysis on the zebra crossings
  • Pedestrian crossing activity and behaviour on zebra crossings
  • Traffic movements, flows, and speeds on the approach to crossings, lights, and bays
  • Pedestrian dwell zones on central crossing islands
  • Traffic occupancy in yellow box junctions
  • Traffic occupancy in loading/parking bays

These sensors are not speed cameras and will not issue fines but they will provide Transport for London (TfL) and Lambeth with the most accurate data on gyratory performance and safety.
